WARNING: you might be surprised how many good things black and white nursery art does for a kid.
Black and white nursery art sparkles imagination
While the image can be in black and white, our mind recreates its colors based on our own experience or preferences. According to American Optometric Association, it is generally believed that babies have good color vision by five months of age. So as early as that they start collecting their color experience. Give them a black and white image by the age when they can talk, and you will be surprised with what they see!
My tot once asked me to draw a dragon driving a convertible. So I did. It was hanging in my son’s nursery for a while and one day, I just asked what color he thinks dragon and convertible is. “The dragon is green”, my then 3-year-old boy said. “The car is red”, he followed. Check out the “Dragon in a Convertible” print here.
A solid anchor in the blurry world of infant
Nobody expects an infant to consciously admire an artwork. However, in his first months this tiny human will be delighted to look at bold black patterns on white which will the only ones to stand out in his blurry world. Due to underdeveloped newborn’s vision system, black and white will be the easiest for him to perceive. They will be his second favourite view. After his parent faces, of course. Just be sure to put those patterns as close as 10-13 inches from the baby’s face. It’s important to change image’s position frequently.
Changing babie’s diapers with no fuss
It is not just pure joy of seeing something clearly that attracts newborns. All the noise, light, shadows, movement, temperature changes of this new world overwhelms a newborn. High contrast shapes and patterns - on the contrary - provide the baby with something simple and engaging to focus on. In this focus – or intense concentration – they can allow their minds to rest. As your infant is busy staring - and sometimes even ‘talking’ to - at an image, you can change his diapers with no fuss. Just don’t overdo this. No matter how appealing black and white images can be, the baby thrives the most on the natural parent-baby interaction.
Conveys message more effectively
When your kid passes this precious age of six to nine months, he becomes interested in other colours too. However, black and white colour contrast is not surpassed by any colour when you want to have your toddler to focus on something. Black and white colour combination gives a sense it communicates something essential, powerful and clear. Be it an image or words, once the kid becomes interested in letters. Therefore nursery wall art messages like “Be Brave”, “Play Nice” written in black are more persuasive compared to other colours.
