Why does the Moon follow us?

My son asked why was the Moon following us while we were driving to the day care this early morning.

‘Why do you think it follows us?’ - I asked.

‘It knows us and wants to go with us everywhere’ - my son answered.

As cute as it was, I felt we could use some science. So here it is.

The Moon is 384 400 km away. It is so far away that the our motion on earth, whether in a car or even in an airplane doesn’t change its position enough for us to notice.

But would not it be nice to imagine for a moment that we have the Moon tied on the leash? :)
